| NW GROUP OF HARDY PLANT SOCIETY WINS LARGE GOLD MEDAL AT SOUTHPORT FLOWER SHOW 2012 |
The Hardy Plant Society NW Group are delighted to win a Large Gold Medal, together with the Christiana Hartley Perpetual Challenge Trophy, for their display.
Taking an original approach to the 2012 theme of ‘Cool’, the design is focussed on the initials of ‘COOL’ - ‘Celebrating our Olympic Legacy’ - using as inspiration the Olympic stadia planting.
Rings on the three vertical posts spell out the word ‘COOL’, white ‘cages’ skirting the planting echoing the structure of the Olympic stadium. The centred ‘gold’ planting shows a range of species, e.g. Heleniums and flowering fennel that can be used to create a gold ‘prairie-planting’ representing the theme around the main stadium. The wet woodland area represents the ‘gully planting’ and includes hostas, ferns, and grasses that prefer damp, shady conditions. The third area with more dominant pink and purple is planted naturalistically and endeavours to replicate the approach used by Sarah Price, who in turn has been inspired by Piet Oudolf.
Members of the HPS are enthusiastic about growing hardy perennial plants. Meetings are held monthly from September to May at Samlesbury War Memorial Hall, Samlesbury, near Preston.
